Countries where same-sex relationships are criminalised

Countries where same-sex relationships are illegal under criminal law in 2026, including those where the death penalty applies on paper. Practical reading for LGBTQ+ travellers.

· How Warnely scores risk →

Around 60 countries still criminalise same-sex relationships under their domestic law in 2026. A small number have the death penalty on paper. Active prosecution of foreign tourists is rare. The indirect risk is harder to dodge: blackmail, police harassment, and the practical consequences of any state body asking questions about a relationship.

This page lists every country in the Warnely dataset where same-sex relationships are recorded as illegal or where the death penalty applies. The note column draws on traveller reporting rather than the formal statute, since the two often diverge.

How this list is built. Filter: countries where same-sex relationships are illegal or carry the death penalty. Death-penalty jurisdictions appear first. Within each tier, countries are ordered by overall Warnely risk score.

For LGBTQ+ travellers visiting any country here, the practical playbook is the same: travel as friends rather than partners, skip local dating apps, do not show identification documents that reveal a same-sex relationship, and read the country guide before you book. Some of these countries can be visited reasonably under those constraints. The active-conflict countries near the top of the list should be avoided in 2026 regardless.
