Travel safety

Countries with the strictest drug laws in 2026

Countries where drug offences carry the death penalty or decade-long prison sentences for travellers in 2026. Every country in the strict and death-penalty tiers, listed.

· How Warnely scores risk →

A small group of countries treat foreign tourists found with drugs the same way they treat their own citizens. In a handful, the maximum penalty on paper is death, typically reserved for trafficking but in some cases applying to possession above small thresholds. In several more, even small recreational quantities carry minimum sentences of five to fifteen years on conviction.

This page lists every country in the Warnely dataset with a drug-law tier of "death" or "severe". The legal frameworks in these jurisdictions have not softened in any meaningful way in 2026, and several have hardened in the last two years.

How this list is built. Filter: countries with drug-law tier "death" or "severe". Sorted with death-penalty jurisdictions first, then alphabetically by country name within each tier.

For any country on this list the practical advice is simple. Bring nothing you would not want to declare at customs, refuse to carry anything for anyone in country, and check any prescription medication you take against the relevant embassy guidance before you fly. Several countries on this list have prosecuted tourists for prescription medication bought legally at home, particularly anything containing codeine, some ADHD medications, and some prescription sleep aids.
